Health Realization Training Center
Health Realization Training Center • 3501 Chicago Avenue South • Minneapolis, MN 55407
Tel: (612) 823-5973 • E-mail: [email protected] About the Center The Glenwood-Lyndale Training Center, using the principles and concepts of Health Realization, assists people to realize and understand the true health, which lies within each of us. This health, also referred to as innate health and resilience, is seen as a birthright, accessible to all, regardless of any social, economic, situational or cultural circumstances. This health is the essence of our personal well-being. In a world of increased demand for improved outcomes, many professional disciplines are changing their approach from a problem and dysfunction based philosophy to a strength, asset and resilience based approach. Many have found that they are able to continue to improve their outcomes by changing their service approach from a problem and dysfunction based philosophy to a strength, asset and resilience based approach. Health Realization has been identified as the "best practice" for implementing this paradigm shift, based on three premises. First, Health Realization is based on the belief that innate health is an unlimited, ever present, natural resource, which is non-contingent or dependent on any external factors or the environment. Secondly, as service providers or helpers operate from this perspective, they live in a higher state of well being themselves. From this state of health they are then able to be in a high state of service. Finally, the by-product of having healthy service providers is seeing a rise in the health of the individual or client who are seeking services. The principles of Health Realization, provide people the building blocks to develop an understanding of human functioning. All people are powered with a spirit, or breath of life; this energy source allows awareness of the human capability to create reality through the process of thought. As people gain an appreciation of the inside-out nature of their experience of life, they are better able to access their true health. From this vantage place they create and live in a higher state of wellbeing, experiencing greater appreciation for family, co-workers and friends, increased mental clarity, enjoyment and motivation, and decreased stress. Everyone creates their experience of life moment to moment through their thinking. Some people innocently create or adopt negative habits of thinking that cover up their health. As people understand the role of thought and recognize their habits of thinking, they can exercise choice, calm their mind or discern themselves from their thinking. Knowing that excessive or obsessive thinking creates circumstances where it is difficult for health to emerge, people access a quieter state of mind to rediscover their true health. A simple analogy is that of the sun and clouds, regardless of the density or duration of the cloud cover seen from earth, the sun in always shining. As with human functioning, our innate health is like the sun, always present, but often covered by our clouds of thought. There is great interest in this philosophy by many individuals, organizations and agencies. Health Realization is attractive because it is based on the premise that all humans, regardless of circumstances, function psychologically in the same manner. This commonality draws people together while allowing the celebration of people’s differences. Individuals are drawn to Health Realization, because the principles and concepts are simple yet profound, and result in people feeling better and operating with insight and good judgement. As people rise in their level of well being, their health acts as the change agent in their relationships both personally and professionally. Identification of health as the agent for change is applicable in all arenas – education, medicine, social service, business, communities, agencies, chemical health, mental health, as well as individual relationships. Specific examples in these arenas are – teachers focusing on the health in their students, resulting in improved academic performance and behavior on the part of the students. Staff/employees maintaining a higher state of wellbeing and feeling less stress with the same amount of work to accomplish in their jobs. Management experiencing higher productivity and less job dissatisfaction for employees. Community members finding personal empowerment to rise above their circumstance and thus fostering healthier, safer communities. The Training Center staff has been teaching the principles of Health Realization to community members and organizations since 1991. The program director, Cindi Claypatch is one of the original Health Realization practitioners in Minnesota. In 1996 the Training Center opened, responding to the increasing interest and demand for training. The Training Center has three areas of focus: (1) Provide the opportunity for individuals to have access to Health Realization training. (2) Work with agencies, businesses, and organizations to assist them in integrating Health Realization in to their programming and organizational culture. (3) Integrate Health Realization into programs offered by our agency. We offer an introductory Health Realization course three to four times a year. A variety of seminars, advanced courses and conferences are held periodically throughout the year. We also provide topic specific workshops and conference presentations for a variety of organizations and businesses. Our services with organizations are customized to meet the goals and needs of the organization. The range of services can be from a three-hour seminar related to a specific topic area to a multi-year project, which would integrate Health Realization and resilience into the culture, programming and operations of the organization.

BACK TO TOP The Health Realization Model: A Brief Overview The Health Realization Model has been in existence for the past 25 years. During this time, the Model has been implemented in businesses, psychology practices, high risk communities, schools, hospitals, social services, clinics, chemical dependency treatment centers and countless other arenas to increase quality of life. In its simplest form, the Model states that all humans are born with a core of innate health. Living in, speaking to, and thinking from this core of health is possible for all people regardless of their economic status, race, age, level of education, etc. Roger Mills was the first to bring the Health Realization Model into communities in 1987. Officials in Florida’s Miami Dade County studied the Modello low income public housing are where school truancy, drug trafficking, domestic abuse, gang violence, chemical dependency and welfare dependence was prevalent. After reviewing the situation and listening to Roger describe the Model’s natural tendency to facilitate empowerment, it was concluded that a new approach (the Health Realization Model) was warranted. Janet Reno supported the initial grant proposal. Within the first few years the results received national recognition. Since that time, the Model has been implemented in communities such as South Central L.A., Stockton, San Jose and Oakland – California, Bronx – New York, Minneapolis – Minnesota and others. The Model has been used to teach residents and social servants in communities how life is experienced from the inside out. The Model points people in the direction of healthy functioning by helping them understand how their thinking processes can create a state of security or insecurity regardless of their life circumstances. When people learn to notice their habits in thinking and find ways to discern themselves from their thoughts, they begin to experience and access innate health, which is described by words such as: wisdom, common sense, instincts, knowledge, natural self-esteem, intelligence, and creativity. As people find ways to access their health, they have a shift in perception, which allows them to notice the nature of their thinking in low moods. They begin to identify and understand how everyone is creating a moment-to-moment experience of their lives via their thought system. As people begin to understand how their mind operates, they become more secure and less apt to take on their own negative thoughts or other people’s negativity. They see people who might be functioning poorly as lacking understanding and have compassion versus taking the dysfunction or negativity personally and responding to it with self-defeating behaviors. This shift in understanding allows for individual empowerment, which in turn leads to community empowerment. It has been our experience that when people identify with their health, they will rise above their circumstances and find solutions in very creative and respectful ways. BACK TO TOP About the Trainers Cindi Claypatch, M.A. Rachel Moreau Stewart, M.S.Ed., M.A.
Cindi Claypatch is the Founder and Director of the Glenwood-Lyndale Health Realization Training Center, where she is a full-time trainer and consultant. For the past twelve years, she was also the Director of Health and Wellness at the Glenwood-Lyndale Community Center and Clinic in the low-income public housing area of North Minneapolis. In addition to her 26 years of experience, she has been license as an alcohol and drug counselor in the state of Minnesota, a B.A. in Human Services with the study psychology and corrections and has completed her Master’s in Human Development with a primary focus in the study of consciousness and alternative and complementary healing methods. She has recently been certified in intuition by the National Institute for the Clinical Application of Behavioral Medicine. She began her work as a chemical dependency counselor in 1979, where she worked with individuals struggling with chemical addiction and their families. In 1981, she co-created the first Dual Diagnosis program in the Midwest at St. Paul Ramsey Medical Center. She also worked with people who had suffered head traumas, spinal cord injuries and burns due to their chemical use or depression. She later went to Abbott-Northwestern Hospital to create a Dual Disorder programming. In 1981, she was exposed to the Health Realization/Resiliency model as it was introduced to the United States from Canada. She immediately saw the dramatic results she had with her clients and set off to do an 18-month internship. She worked in Minneapolis as a counselor in a clinic with author Joseph Bailey who wrote the Serenity Principle, Slowing Down to the Speed of Life and The Speed Trap. The clinic was the first clinic in the country to adopt the philosophy. It later became a training institute. In 1991, she felt called to work in the low-income public housing area and bring this understanding to people who typically have less access to healthcare. The community center was housed in the middle of a heavily gang-influenced area. She created programs where parents and children learned the Health Realization/Resiliency model and were empowered to change their lives and community. In 1995, she co-created a collaborative to build a family practice clinic connected to the clinic. In 1998, the clinic received the American Hospital Association’s Nova Award, which was one of the five clinics selected from 200 clinics nationwide. Since 1982, she has been presenting at national and local conferences. She has also provided consultation, education and training to school systems, communities, social service agencies, health care systems, chemical dependency treatment centers, parent education, individuals and families. She continues to stay connected to other trainers in the United States. She has worked with dropout prevention and intervention programs and with alternative schools nationwide. Rachel has also spent time evaluating and researching quality youth development efforts to improve community involvement, educational quality, and educational outreach for youth and their families for after-school programs and for teen pregnancy and poor health outcomes prevention programs. BACK TO TOP Benefits for individuals who attend trainings This understanding is a gift for anyone who feels stressed, overwhelmed, too busy, or desires a more manageable and meaningful life. Health Realization teaches people how to maintain their peace of mind regardless of what is happening in our lives. It gives them the tools to stay grounded and live life with a greater presence, which in turn allows us to experience improved relationships. People consistently report less worry, anxiety, and job burnout and experience an increase of personal effectiveness, creativity and improved physical health. BACK TO TOP Benefits for organizations and managers When people understand this framework they create healthier professional relationships and work environments. They transition through change with more ease. In these times when we are asked to do more with less, employees manage the workload with improved quality and less co-miseration. Service oriented agencies notice a direct correlation between the health of the helper and the impact on clients and outcomes. Health Realization offers a “best practice” to deal with customer service, diversity, conflict resolution and other employee issues. It provides a common neutral language that can be used throughout an organization. As employees feel empowered, relationships and team work improve. They become more creative and operate in a “state of service.” When we enjoy coming to work, there is an increase in productivity and potential cost savings for the organization through a decrease in turnover rates, staff efficiency, benefits costs and liability. There is a natural decrease in demands on the managers and supervisors by employees of the organization. The training center has worked with staff from a variety of arenas: Education, medicine, social service, business, communities, churches, non-profit agencies, youth development, chemical and mental health. BACK TO TOP Impact of Training Educators report that focusing on health versus dysfunction in their students, witness improved academic performance and behavior. Employees from different systems report feeling less stress regardless of the demands of their jobs. Managers see higher productivity and less job dissatisfaction amongst their employees. Individuals experience personal empowerment and hopefulness. BACK TO TOP Offerings for Individuals Level I: Bringing Health to Life

This seminar will explore the inside-out nature of experience and how the mind innocently contributes to maintaining and re-experiencing illness and trauma. Further, we will offer alternative options and understandings that promote healthier responses. #2: Being Whole/Living Your Purpose
All people come into the world with gifts and purpose. However, many times, life circumstances and expectations have dictated or interrupted our paths. As people proceed off course, they can develop self-doubt, disenchantment, habits and illness. This seminar will explore ways to reconnect to our purpose and discover the value of our journeys. We will look at what happens when people don’t live their life’s purpose and more importantly, what happens when they do!
#3: Instilling Hope in the Hopeless
This seminar will explore how hopelessness is created when people operate from a limited belief system. We will investigate ways to help people create shifts in others to go beyond their previous understanding. From this perspective, people experience renewed hope, joy and reduced feelings of stress, responsibility and burnout. Parenting with a Calm Perspective
Parenting with a calm perspective . . . does that sound easier said than done? Approaching parenting from a calm perspective is less stressful, requires less effort and energy, and usually produces better results. In this two-part session, learn more about how we create our reality through our thinking and become aware of when your mind is taking you in non-productive directions. We will identify strategies to get you back to clear thinking where common sense, wisdom and creativity are more accessible. We will also address the impact of moods (our children’s and our own) and how to parent through them.
