Barter Network Different
types of volunteer opportunities at Pillsbury United Communities include: • | Special
Events – volunteers serve between two to eight hours at one of
over a hundred community events sponsored annually by our community
centers. | • | Student
Internships – apply classroom learning to real life situations. | • | Group
Projects – open to school, corporate, service and church groups.
Projects may involve three to 40 volunteers who serve collectively
at special or individually designed events. | • | Partnerships
– groups may "adopt" a portion of the community center by
providing ongoing service in a specific area such as a reading program,
computer labs, food shelf service, and many others. | • | Ongoing
– these volunteers serve a minimum of two hours per week for at least
three months, engaging in activities like tutoring school-age children,
tending community gardens, helping prepare food for our community
cafe or chairing a special event committee, among many others. |

positions vary at each center. Positions are available at all times. The

contact the Volunteer Coordinator at any of the neighborhood centers listed
on the Centers page of this site. All
volunteers must fill out an application and attend an orientation
session. Placement may take up to two weeks. Kids
College: A special opportunity to make a
difference in the life of a child.
Kids College is a new tutoring program for youth in grades K-8
with an emphasis on reading and reading comprehension skills. The program
will begin in October of 2003 and run until May of 2004. Skills/qualifications
needed:
• Desire to work with children
• Patience
• 1 hour commitment ( 1 day per week) for a minimum of 3 months
• No former tutoring
experience is necessary – we will train! Kids College sites
are located throughout the Minneapolis area. Please contact the Kids College

What is the Community Barter Network?
The Community Barter Network (CBN) is an exchange of of services program
offered by Pillsbury United Communities. It is modeled after the "Time
Dollar" concept, where time is exchanged – not money. CBN helps
people meet their needs and increases the quality of life while building
trust and strengthening community. Social events and skill-building
workshops are offered at various times throughout the year. Since 1999,
CBN participants have had the option to spend their earned credits
at the Time Dollar Store, located on the second floor of Pillsbury
House. This unique shopping experience helps participants meet their
need for products as well as services. How does it work?
A CBN participant provides a service such as yard work, tutoring or anything
they want to offer and earns one credit per one hour of service. Later,
that same participant can use his or her earned credits to receive
a service, such as transportation, resume preparation or child care.
The list of services is as diverse as the program’s two hundred-plus
participants and growing each day. How do I join?
Attend one of two CBN orientations held every month at Pillsbury House:2nd
Tuesday of the month, 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. 3rd Wednesday of the month,
10:00 – 11:30 a.m. Who do I contact?
